Been looking at some of those tabletop flytying stations and decided that even though I ain't no woodworker "I can make one of those".
The cost of wide enough lumber was   and one dude made his out of some cheap cuttingboards from Wal-mart but still a little pricey for me. So while kill'n time one day I walked pass this..

$8.50, right in my price range

Did some disassembly..

and had enough wood for the whole thing...

trim a little here and there

use some on hand 10d nails...

and, wah la...

Redneck $10 Wal-mart  Fly Tying Table Top Station
Still need to add a few slots for tools and stuff but for $8.50, a few nails and 5 more woodscrews than I took out of the original tv tray I'm pleased.

Now that's cheap genius!!

I've been looking around and can't find anything that matches my taste or wallet and you come up with that....Perfect!

Any ideas on a nice tool holder using the same philosophy?

That's too cool.  The basic wood I've been pricing (probably the same size or close) with any kind of prepping (not finished, mind you) already done cost $14 - $16.  I may have to seriously look at that.

I'm using a small table right now but would really like to have the basic fly stuff (i.e. tools and misc.) self contained.  Is that some kind of hard wood?  I actually looked at a cutting board (pie I think).  Now mind you, I'm fairly secure in my manhood, but it had Betty something or another engraved in it.  I just couldn't get past it Grin
