TVFF - Rises...

TVFF mourns the loss of founder Fred Stevenson

Fred Stevenson is known to many of the oldtimers as a founder and long time President of TVFF. He was also a good friend and mentor to many of us. Fred was an accomplished rod builder and fly tyer. Some of us are still fishing with rods he built for us. He was an organizaer and member of the South-Eastern Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers, where he received a lifetime Achivement Award, Man of the Year, Charlie Brooks Life Memorial Award, and the Lapis Lazuli Award. Fred will be rembered for his contributions to the club and his kindness. He will be missed. But their was much more to Fred than fly fishing. Following is his obituary:

Fred B. Stevenson, 87

He was born and raised in Ardmore , Tenn. , then moved to Huntsville , where he has been a lifelong resident. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Korean War and served in Luzon, Philippine Islands, South Pacific, Solomon Islands , New Guinea , Mindanao , Japan , and Korea . He also taught ROTC at the University of Virginia . He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with the "V" and Oak Leaf Cluster from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He was a member of the Ardmore Masonic Lodge #24 for 50 years.
He graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in electrical engineering, then entered the civil service at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville in July 1955 and retired in May 1978. He was later inducted as a member of the USASMDC Retiree Hall of Fame. He was on the Tennessee Valley Chapter Honor Flight trip on May 31, 2008.
He was a member and deacon of Morningside Baptist Church . His major hobby was nature photography and he enjoyed bird watching and traveling. He received a certificate of graduation from the New York Institute of Photography and UAH. He was an avid bass and fly fisherman and was well known for his custom built fishing rods and tied fishing flies. He started the first community watch program in Huntsville in March 1979, where he later became known as the "Grandfather of Community Watch." He organized and was a member of the Tennessee Fly Fishers and was a member of the South-Eastern Council Federation of Fly Fishers, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award, Man of the Year, Charlie Brooks Life Memorial Award, and the Lapis Lazuli Award. He was also a member of the National Wildlife Federation, AL/TN Trail of Tears Remembrance Association, Tennessee Valley Audubon Society, National Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, and the Huntsville Botanical Garden , where he taught Birding 101 Classes. He was a mentor to many.

Monthly Meetings

Normally the third Thursday of every month at 7 pm. Join us for some excellent presentations, and a chance to be with others who love the sport. All are welcome.

Fly Tying and Lessons

Fly Tying sessions are held twice each month on the second and fourth Thursday at 7 pm. Beginners welcome!

The meeting location for both events is Faith Presbyterian Church (center building, second floor, room 209), 5003 Whitesburg Dr S, Huntsville, AL 35802. Click here for Google map location.

Tennessee Valley Fly Fishers (TVFF) is a non-profit organization, located in Huntsville, Alabama for the purpose of fly fishing, fellowship, information sharing, education and the preservation, conservation and wise use of our fishing waters and game fish. Our home waters are in North Alabama, Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Arkansas and the Gulf Coast. All are welcome!
